Railfest 2013 "BACK IN STEAM"
AT THE THROTTLE RETURNS FOR RAILFEST 2013!
Flagg Coal 0-4-0 saddle tank steam locomotive No. 75, also known as “HANK” will visit the Midland Railway during Railfest 2013, Labor Day weekend August 30-September 2nd, 2013. Visitors will be able to run the locomotive part as part of the railway’s “At the Throttle” program.
The engine was purchased from Vulcan Iron Works by the Flagg Coal Company of Avoca, PA. in the 1930′s when it was new. The engine is now owned by Barney and John Gramling of Ashley, Ind., who also own Lehigh Valley Coal Company 0-6-0, No 126, which visited Midland Railway in 2012. Through the Gramlings “Have Engine, Will Travel” program the two locomotives are trucked around the United States visiting various heritage railways and museums.
Midland Railway visitors will be able to purchase a 30-minute session at the throttle of No. 75. After a half hour safety and operation session, you can take the throttle along with a qualified engineer in the cab. Participants must be at least 18 years old with a valid driver’s license and sign a release form. Clothing appropriate to a working rail yard should be worn at all times, such as Jeans or overalls, work style boots (no open toe or tennis shoes), long sleeved shirt, and gloves are required. Sessions are $150 for each participant. Please visit the Railway’s website for more details.
“At the Throttle” sessions will take place August 30th, 2013 between 8:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. To schedule a session, call 913-721-1211 or you can purchase your time slot at www.midlandrailway.org/home/hours/buy-tickets.
